How Do We Not Know?

How did four highly educated adults not know that the purpose of hospice care was to kill our mother slowly and painlessly? Two weeks after enlisting the assistance of hospice, our mother whose only complaint was that it hurt to be turned, but not enough for pain meds was given a high dose of morphine by a hospice nurse of death. This was just minutes after a doctor had examined her and determined that her vitals were good, she was awake and not in pain. Now she cannot swallow or be fully aroused. Hours before the overdose I called to share how my first day of school went, because I am a teacher. She carried her end of the conversation asking appropriate questions and laughing at appropriate times. Now I cannot even have a conversation with her. The nurses have diagnosed my mother based on what? When she left the hospital she had just had surgery to remove a cancerous tumor. The doctors said that the cancer might have spread to her lungs or she might have pneumonia. The nurse determined two days later that she not only had lung cancer but that it had spread to her brain. WHAT!? Again I have to wonder what she is basing this on. And forget privacy. When I was leaving for a few days to return to my home 2,000 miles away, not sure that my mother would still be with us when I returned a few days later, the nurse found my wanting to spend my last few minutes at my mother's bedside inappropriate. In addition whenever we go into my mother's room everything we say to her is written down to be shared with others later. The nurse told my sister that I needed to come to terms with the fact that people die. "We are all dying," is her pat answer. I am an ordained minister and I accept that death is a fact of life. I know that I will die someday, but for now I am living, not dying. What kind of healthy person lives by the mantra that she is dying? So, you may be asking, "What's the point here?" Do your research. DO NOT USE HOSPICE unless you are looking for a way to speed up the death process albeit painlessly. If you feel that the best thing for your family member is to be heavily sedated so much so that they cannot eat and breathing slows to the point that their brain becomes deprived of oxygen then hospice is for you. If you happen to live in San Antonio, Texas and you use Vitas and better yet the nurse assigned to you is Phyllis, then you better start planning the funeral. Do your research. My family's experience is not unique. Now that it is too late, I have discovered thousands of others who have had similar experiences.

I have a hospice horror story concerning my parents and my sister, the supervising gereatic nurse who promiced them a "good death." I was powerless to stop her, though I did everything to try and stop her.
You can read about it on the Memorial website I have created for my parents. Once there, be sure and see the "Frank & Earnest Diary" page to see where certain family members were defending her, expcept now all is quiet since I been putting educational stuff up there too. Seems like that is all we can do is educate others so it dosent happen to their loved ones. I know her intentions were good but we all know the road to ruin is paved with good intentions.

It saddens me to hear how my people are so ignorant to see that hospice "care" kills people by overdosing them with drugs. These same drugs were used in the Vietnam war when soldiers wanted to commit suicide.
I would like to share my experience with these nurses of death. My grandfather who had a stroke could not walk or talk. He can well recognize and understand us (family). This jackass of a doctor (dr.death) came into my grandfathers hospital room and brainwashed me and my family to put him in hospice (suicide) care.
We were so gullible and agreed for the betterment of my grandfather. Little did we know this care was to quickly kill off a person like a animal. I sadly comparing hospice care to the holocaust. Where innocent people lost their lives for no reason. That is what hospice is doing. Theres an old saying that the devil cannot enter your house without agreeing to let him in. So my grandfather entered hospice care and within 2 weeks he was gonna die. How can a man who has broken his back to provide care for his children die and devoted christian just die when his health was good? We called 911 and later he was in the ER. The hospital staff asked us why we were overdosing him with morphine? Overdosing? That f*cking b!tch of a nurse was killing our grandfather. This enraged me so much that I broke down and cried. My grandfather is strong willed and survived the lethal injection by satans demons. Its been two years and my grandfather is still alive and kicking. Today there was an article in yahoo news that a little girl was granted a dying wish. I was curios and clicked on it and then I saw the word HOSPICE in the article. Very sad.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090619/ap_on_re_us/us_dying_wish

The 10-year-old girl desperately wanted to see the new Disney-Pixar movie, "Up." But the cancer-stricken girl was too sick to go to a theater.

Thanks to a family friend who got in touch with the movie studio Pixar, an employee of the Emeryville-based company arrived at Colby's home with a DVD copy of the movie, The Orange County Register reported Friday. The girl died later that night.

Colby's mother, Lisa, said she had asked her daughter if she could hang on until the movie arrived.

"I'm ready (to die), but I'm going to wait for the movie," she said her daughter replied.

"Up" is the animated tale of a grumpy old man who, after his wife's death, tries to fulfill their joint dream of visiting South America by tying thousands of balloons to his house and floating away.

"When I watched it, I had really no idea about the content of the theme of the movie," Colby's mother told the Register. "I just know that word 'Up' and all of the balloons and I swear to you, for me it meant that (Colby) was going to go up. Up to heaven."

Colby, who was diagnosed with vascular cancer in 2005, saw previews for the film in April.

"It was from then on, she said, 'I have to see that movie. It is so cool,'" family friend Carole Lynch said.

But the girl's health began to deteriorate. On June 4, Curtin asked a hospice company to bring a wheelchair so that her daughter could go to a movie theater but the chair was not delivered over the weekend, Curtin said.

By June 9, Colby was too sick to go anywhere.

Another family friend, Terrell Orum, called both Pixar and Disney, which owns the animation studio. The message was received by Pixar officials, who agreed to send someone to Colby's house the next day with a copy of "Up" for a private screening, Orum said.

Unfortunately, hospice has become big business ftrequently at the expense of taxpayer money and patient care, often spawning serious fraud. Our website -- http://www.fraudblawg.com -- tracks all hospice fraud stories and has detailed information about hospice regulations and how to report fraud. Hospice – dignity-focused, palliative treatment for the terminally-ill and their families -- has unquestionably improved the care of countless patients who might otherwise have died in isolation, fear, and pain. Likewise it has provided much-needed hope and encouragement to the bereaved. An absolute entitlement under the Medicare program, it has also heavily-lined the pockets of venturers and investors and spawned perhaps the ugliest and most egregious healthcare fraud facing the United States’ terminally-ill healthcare system. To read further about how the Medicare Hospice Benefit has been abused, go to http://fraudblawg.com/2010/03/18/the-medicare-hospice-benefit-sure-was-a-good-idea-til-greed-got-in-the-way/

WOW, this story sound like I wrote it, I mean this happen to me and my family except I was the only seem too see what was really happening. I strongly believe hospice kills patient with Morphine. My mother pass away March 2010 with Breast Cancer but the cancer did not kill her it was the morphine. Thanks for posting this

Sorry you had to go throught it also. It is a terrible thing. They use morphine and a cocktail of other drugs to put them in a medical coma like state. They lose their appitites, forget who they are and eventually either overdose or waste away from malnutrition. It happens more often than we care to think, and is all about cost with them.

My Father died on August 20, 2010 and yes, VITAS was his hospice care also. Before VITAS came to the house, just 2 days before, he was riding a horse. That is something he loved to do. I am sorry to read about your Mother.
My Father was dying of Cancer, and yes he was in pain. I do not feel that he was ready to die though. Hospice came out to the house, changed all of his medications without evan looking at his medical chart. They had him on Morphine, Methadone, and a number of other drugs for agitation. If my Father moved his legs, they said he was agitated. Evan when my Father was asleep, they were administering drugs to him.
My Father could not move, he oould not talk. He was so doped up. They did not feed him any food or give him any water. He laid there and starved to death. It is against the law to do that to animals and we are letting VITAS do that to human beings. That is inhumane.
My Father died 8 days after VITAS came out to the house.

I'm so very sorry about your mother. There are so many stories like this. And the proposed health bill is going to make this worse. Please, if you care about the medical care your family is receiving, do not re-elect Obama. And hope that that Obamacare is denied. Under the bill, doctors won't be able to make a living, new doctors won't be able to pay off medical school when they're done, and older doctors will have to retire early. We will see hospice (euthanasia) grow wildly as a mechanism to save money. My Grandmother was killed by hospice 2 years ago in a suburb of Detroit. Grandma was a very strong woman. She always used natural methods to cure any ailments. She wouldn't even take an Advil. And she prided herself on being able to live on her own at 94. Yes, she was 94, so some say she lived a good life. BUT, she could have lived 5 more years..she wasn't in pain..and she would never have wanted to die this way. The nurses are practitioners of evil. How they find people so controlling, callus and calculating is baffling. The industry must be stopped. My grandmother was a wealthy woman. Hospice was brought in to help her with daily care after she fainted and was dehydrated..my aunts arranged the hospice care to avoid the estate paying for a private nurse. (I believe they committed fraud, but that's another story). My Grandmother was exactly you describe your mother..and "Mary" describes her father -- still living their lives and engaged with their families until hospice arrived. My Grandmother deteriorated to death within a month. And the "nurses" wouldn't tell me or my siblings what was happening with her when we inquired...they wouldn't tell us what drugs she was on or why..and they wouldn't even let us speak with her alone. ANd my maniacal aunt was the executor of the estate. She was in charge and when my family pressed the issue of Grandma's obvious overdosing (for NO REASON) they called the police claiming we were interfering with her "care". The saddest part of all is, Grandma died scared, drugged, sad and desperate. She was barely coherent. Slumped in a wheelchair in the living room of her home. Again, why?? When her body went to the coroner to determined time/cause of death, the coroner said he found bruises consistent with struggle and abuse! Grandma was fighting with the nurses to avoid receiving the medication that was destroying her. The coroner ordered an autopsy..then concluded her death to be a "homocide"!! Only to have the DA ignore the death ruling due to Grandma's age. Makes me so sick. Now age discrimination in healthcare is starting to become an issue for 50 and 60 year olds. We are headed down a sick path of legal murder. VOTE REPUBLICAN because continued social programs for things like birth control and the NAACP cannot support old people and if it isn't fixed, retirees are as good as dead. BE CAREFUL HOW YOU VOTE. THIS ISN"T A SMALL PROBLEM. Obamacare is euthanasia.

I think my mother was also killed by hospice. She was in end stage COPD, but alert and not planning to check out yet. She was fighting as hard as she could. She had a bed sore on the mend and another starting up. Gilchrist Hospice came in, ignored my warnings not to dose her with morphine. The idea was mitigate bedsore pain, not kill her outright. She went into a downward spiral after her very first dose. They kept pushing more morphine then liquid ativan. They took her off her other meds. And some of my siblings trusted them. She was "mercy killed" under our noses. I am trying to figure out what to do about this. Don't want this to happen to anyone else's mother or father, sister, brother, son or daughter.

Still happening to innocent people who have been brainwashed by hospice that we should just let them lay there and do what the feel like doing . They r sick and don't feel like doing anything that is why they have family to help them feed themselves and take a drink. It is not about giving the dying person respect ~ it is about loving them to help them! Help live their last days to the fullest~ not hasten the enevitable. We r all going to die ~ dah did we think we were going to be spared?

My Mom was killed with Palliative Sedation. She entered HOSPICE Care Facility on Monday evening 8/13/2012 and was dead by Friday afternoon 8/17/2012. They were giving her Morphine, Ativan, and Haldol. She was smiling, talking, even laughing when we took her to the facility on Monday evening for assessment and stabilization while making arrangements to bring her home. She had just been referred to Hospice that week. I am also dumbfounded, how we as intelligent people did not know what they were doing to her. It was horrifying, and I also felt I could not stop the killing even with legal documents proving I was the Health Care Surrogate. I was told “NO”, by the Doctor when I asked him to withdrawal the medications causing the obvious sedation. All this was done without our consent. They gave her drugs round the clock almost immediately putting her into a drug induced coma. They gave her a urine catheter, laxatives, and put her on a bed monitor so that if she even moved a muscle they would come running with more drugs. They claim the patient is agitated but it is the drugs that cause the agitation. At the end they even added another subcutaneous patch on her other arm so they could shoot more drugs into her. Her tongue protruded out one side and she had no muscle control. She was in a coma. Her eyes however were slightly opened and at one point there was one tear that lingered on her cheek. She moaned constantly as she fought for every breath! She could not talk, she could not object, and she had no voice! They had reduced her to this shadow of a human being. She died with no dignity and this will forever have a profound effect on me and others in my family. This horrid trickery of what Hospice calls palliative care has left a scar on my heart and in my mind forever. BEWARE of Palliative Sedation. No human being should die in this manner without giving full explicit consent! I am appalled and angry, and horrified that we can somehow as a society find any justification for this kind of behavior from the very people who are suppose to care for and provide for the needs of terminal patients. I have a resolve to pursue this issue and inform as many people as I can. There needs to be legislation in place to stop this injustice from happening to innocent victims of circumstance. Never should Palliative Sedation be used without Explicit Informed Consent! I live in Florida and even the Statues outlined in the Florida Constitution state there is to be Informed Consent and further state that alternatives, treatment plans, etc should be explained to the patient or Health Care Surrogate along with the risks involved. Palliative Sedation as defined by the American Medical Association should be a treatment of last resort. In no way should a Doctor take it upon himself to do this aggressive palliative treatment without the Explicit Informed Consent of the Patient or Advocate. The kicker here is that the Medical Examiner in Jacksonville, Florida will not touch a Hospice death; they say it is not in their jurisdiction. Seems like Hospice has been given a free ticket to ride! My Mother had lung cancer in one lung and depended on the left lung completely. However, Hospice took away her very breath by giving her lethal doses of opiates along with Haldol and Ativan. These drugs especially when combined cause Respiratory Distress, and when given at high doses cause Coma and even Death. Many of the horrifying symptoms my Mother was displaying were actually caused by the drugs. Palliative Sedation without Explicit Informed Consent is Euthanasia, so do not let them fool you! It is time for the Supreme Court to stand up and be counted. Do not hide behind the 1997 Supreme Court ruling vetoing Assisted Suicide yet condoning Palliative Sedation as an alternative for terminal patients in intolerable pain. Without explicit guidelines in place, the Supreme Court has opened Pandora’s Box.

This horrible thing happened to my father in 2010. Chased down constantly by HOSPICE via his health insurance with their "wonderful" offerings, all lies. Guess they decided that 93 was too old and insurance co. didn't want to take any risks of having to pay $$ out for an old guy. The worst thing is that HOSPICE DEBILITATED him first with their drugs (he was on none at all - didn't need them), and although he fought for 6 weeks (that's how strong he was), he passed away. My sister and I paid for a chemical autopsy to be done afterward, and sure enough, LETHAL DOSES of meds!! HOSPICE DOCTOR JURKREGGI made some bucks off this. His job was to make my dad "terminal" first. My dad was NOT TERMINAL and was in NO PAIN, but they created that. Please beware...because HOSPICE is being used as a TOOL now...not what it used to be. And what more clever tool than this? Always respected in the past, but no longer...GREED speaks louder than integrity. HOSPICE will SUCK YOU IN and CHASE YOU DOWN until they get you into their abyss. Sound familiar? Somewhat like Hitler's antics? History repeating itself? Oh, you bet!! Please take care of your elderly loved one...this is not science fiction!

Morphine is dished out in copious amounts with little to no oversight. I now know, with hindsight, that our father in law was overdosed on purpose. He didn't want morphine, and yet they had him so highly dosed that he died within the week from suffocation. He was unable to clear his throat or move his diaphragm. I cannot substantiate this, but I feel strongly that the nurse told him what his plan was and carried it out in our presence. I think this "angel" of death has become quite addicted to the power he exerts over his victims. And I think he has cause to feel this way as no one is going to ask him the hard questions and he will never be bought to trial. I am terrified for my future if this is the culture we continue to allow.

I'm sorry to hear about your horrible experience. We feel so cheated because we open the door to strangers (nurses, doctors) we believe are in a position to help yet they set out to take away something they have no right to, and that is most precious, a loved one. I too have a hospital/hospice nightmare story.
I don't understand how people can defend hospice. Sure hospice helps people when they are obviously at a stage in life where they are ready to die and yes hospice can be there to make that easier on the family and the patient. But that is not what we are talking about here. We are talking about patients who do not have a clear diagnosis of terminal illness, we are talking about euthanizing people. I wish people would stop confusing these two very different situations.

I brought my mother to the hospital because one night she had trouble breathing. In the ER she got some relief but the ER doctor admitted her to Trinity Hospital in Birmingham Al. The first day I saw that the nurses were being very rough with my mom, they caused a leg injury, she was covered in hematomas. I said I'm taking her out of here the daoctor said if I did, I would be responsible for all bills (that's a lie) then he said you can leave but only with hospice. We met with the hospice social worker who told us her plans of starvation, withholding water, then comfort and care in the form of morphine. (I still didn't even have a diagnosis for my mom.) I told the hospice nurse that it sounded like euthanizing, and I mention that is illegal in the US, she said "anything is possible with hospice" I said I'm not going to starve my mother you can just forget it. Then the attending hospitalist, Stirling Shirah said if my mom doesn't leave with hospice she won't be leaving cause we don't want her bouncing back and forth from her home to the ER. I learned later that if a patient gets discharged and returns within 30 days the hospital is fined by medicare or has to pay the full hospital bill for the new hospital stay. Dr. Shirah made it clear that he would end my mother's life if I decided not to accept hospice. My mother died at Trinity hospital a few days later. We still do not know what killed her.

Review latest 2013 United States versus "Blank" Hospice. Many answers might be found there. I found my answers there (which I suspected in the first place). For the most part it all comes down to very big business running hospices and putting money before the patient. Many patients signed up much too early and put on continuous care which pays the most money to the "big business". It is alleged (and I know it happened to my mother) that simple antibiotics are delayed for things like bladder infections so the elderly patient gets sick with fever, then big business can call for "continuous round the clock care". Hospice is paid by Medicare and Medicare has specific rules and regs. they expect hospices to follow, but many times they don't. You have to do your homework and search and read on the net about the unconscionable abuses happening to the elderly right under our noses. If you want answers, read the official complaint by the United States. What happened to my mother was a nightmare and I will never be the same. I will forever speak out about those that would so deliberately abuse the most vulnerable of our society - the disabled and the elderly.

I just went through this, I asked questions, but not the right questions. I was never given options except morphine, and had to fight to get the dose brought down when I saw the distress it caused. I was lied to constantly about my mothers vitals to try and force me to have more morphine given...by the time I realized that Hospice was a premature death sentence, there was no coming back for my mother. I will also forever be heart broken...and somehow, I will make sure that people know in advance that Hospice is evil...

I felt its purpose was to kill too.. The cocktail of oxycoctin, vicodin, morphine and others given all at once would kill most people. My mother had a horrible experience with Hospicie. My elderly brother did not want to be bothered with calls when she had to go to the hospital .. most often for urinary tract infections. When she got home, her nurse, would tell everyone her time was near, and that she knew the "process of death", because she had took care of her Dad while he died. In the next several weeks, I got calls from other siblings that did not want to bothered with visits sporadic visits to the hospital. One sister had a father in law with Parkinson's Disease that was in an hospital for the elderly. He was then moved to Hospice and had been in a coma. SHe noted that Hospice "helped so much". I couldn't help but notice part of the motivation of Hospice was to get more help, as the family did not have enough money for all of the inhome health care desired for 24 hour round the clock treatment. The next time mom got sick they took her to speciality hospital. I visited and stayed with her overnight. She was refusing pain medication at that time, and totally lucid. She enjoyed eating and watching television. My siblings told me a Hospice Representative would be coming the following the day. I spoke to my mom and she said she did not want Hospice to come into her home. She already had in home caregivers that she trusted. She was a shy person and preferred to stay with the people she had. The next day the Hospice workers came along with some sibling. They heard my mother tell them and my siblings flat out that she did not want Hospice. My brother that was the executor and power of attorney was not present. The loud and aggressive took the reins and demanded Hospice. It turned in to a screaming match between me and my brother. Hospice workers just talked over my mom right in front of her and said, "well call us and we will come at any time, we will explain it all to you.. blah blah." They did not care that the brother that wanted Hospice did not have the Power of Attorney. They did not care that my mother was objecting orally right in front of them. They just kept talking about their "program" and how it gives the family more help and talked right over my mom like she was not there. She did not have any dementia or alheimzers. She had Multiple sclerosis for years. Hospice kept "selling it hard". My mom went home without Hospice and within hours of coming home my aggressive brother called Hospice while my mother was asleep. She was given as many as eight pills at a time including several pain pills. She never woke up again. When I visited the next day and saw the Hospice workers in her home I was enraged. Mom was a sleep and could not speak for herself. Rose the nurse was happy as she said, "see I told you she was dying." My mother died on Christmas eve. Her wishes were not listened to and I believe Hospice in effect "killed her". The nurse told me my aggressive acting elder brother, the salesman only visited mom for under five minutes when he did visit prior to her death. That was too much for him. Hospice is too often a way for insurance companies to save money on hospital or long term care costs. Hospice can be a form of murder.

My mother had pancreatic cancer for three months when she decided on her own, to enter hospice. She was alert. She gave directions to the hospice and ate dinner that evening then went to sleep. My three sisters and their kids were there. The next day after work, I went through the doors to visit my Mother in her new home. When I got to the room, she waa in the throes of death. She was on morphine and in a coma. They told us she had never even awoke that morning. She died that evening. ONE DAY AFTER ENTERING THE DOOR. She never did drugs and I believe they dosed her andbthrew her into a coma.I will always believe this. She may not have had much longer, a few weeks maybe. It would have been better than what we got.

My mother had pancreatic cancer for three months when she decided on her own, to enter hospice. She was alert. She gave directions to the hospice and ate dinner that evening then went to sleep. I have a horror story as well as the rest of you and unfortunately we found out about the corrupt system of hospice the hard way. Since then I have decided to start an awareness group for people like us and in hopes that we can get the word out so that others are not subject to the same thing. Please feel free to check out the page and leave a comment. Just be advised that it is still a new site and I don't have everything I want on there just yet. Let's stand together and prevent this from happening to anyone else!!

Morphine is a killer for the elderly
Since 2010 they wanted me to bring hospice in. Wish I would of not listen to RN Case Manager telling me hospice would help me. Back in September 2014 I let hospice in and all they told me to do is giving her morphine for the pain when change the bandage on her foot. Morphine made the pain worse, cause vomiting, blood pressure dropped, made it hard for her to drink and eat for my mom. Their solution more morphine and anti vomiting and nausea medication in cover what the morphine was causing.

My mother was also a victim of hospice. She was having heart issues and diagnosed with cancer. She planed to live with caner and live out her last few months. Hospice came in and immediately started her on morphine and a cocktail of drugs. It took 4 days of my dad giving her all the recommended drugs and doses. She became so disoriented. She was not eating or drinking. How could this have happened? I cannot believe that this organization is able to get away with this.

People are saying Obama care, actually this has been going on before Obama care. Our relative was a healthy elder who was killed just because of her age they tried to kill her in the hospital about 3 different times with overdoses. Then they tried to tell us she was dying from deteriorating and stroke like symptoms. When the doctor found out that we knew it was drugs then he helped us. She had a hospital fungal infection that that started out as a skin infection that was never treated. Then instead of the fungal meds being continued they decided not only to cut off her fungal meds but give her antibiotics which killed her. That was the plan. It was so obvious in the medical records. She was in the hospice for only about an hour and they managed to kill her. She was already dying because she was getting medicine that they knew would make her condition worse and she was not getting the meds she needed. He death certificate listed several fatal diseases that she did not have. The investigators said she only had the hospital infection. There are so many ways of killing people. Family should have an investigation done and autopsy just so they can know that their loved one was murdered. We knew ours was but could not do anything because lawyers do not take on cases of elders who were killed by hospital employees. It is horrible and things need to change cause there is too much killing in the medical field not only in hospice but hospitals and nursing homes also. This includes nursing homes where patients go to recover from minor elective surgeries.Nursing homes and hospitals are similar to hospice they also do not give patients their meds only deadly sedatives replace their meds. They can force them to take the sedatives or trick them in to taking them.

My mom went on Hospice 5 months ago because she has congestive heart failure and was given 3-6 months to live. She was given lots of morphine and we were told that we had to call Hospice rather than 911 during emergencies.
During hospice, on nice summer days we took my mom out to eat using a wheelchair, which she enjoyed so much. When Hospice found out about these "outings" the hospice nurse began to make subtle comments about "Medicare fraud" and she began to say that my mom is stable enough to get off Hospice. I pleaded with her that my mom was not well and she can hardly breath after walking only 1 foot to her bedside commode. "Then why is she going places?" the nurse asked, and she said "I was told that your mom went to a birthday party & was joyful." I pleaded with her that these outings were rare & that we used a wheelchair. After this, the nurse began to act differently and she seemed mad at us.
One nice summer day when wheeling my mom into a nice steakhouse, my sister and I joked, "I hope those hospice nurses don't see us, they will be mad that mom isn't dying."
Fast forward, my mom's discharge was scheduled for Oct 20th, but the nurse and social worker sped up the process and released her on Sept 30th because my mom no longer met the "Medicare criteria" for being on Hospice care. I joked with my sisters, "I guess mom isn't dying fast enough for their liking."
On Wednesday of this week, they discharged my mom off Hospice even though she was very congested & could hardly breath. The nurse told us "tomorrow we will send someone to take her bedside table and bedside commode because it is no longer covered." I said, "but she can hardly walk, and she goes to the bathroom several times a day." The nurse said, "if she can get in a car and go places, then she can walk to the bathroom just fine." I again reminded her, "she only goes out once in a while & we use a wheelchair." She chastised me again as if I was just trying to get free stuff.
5 hours after Hospice discharge, my mom started shaking all over, and was hot, & was breathing heavily from all her congestion. In good faith I still called Hospice (since it was the day of her discharge) and the on-call nurse said "she probably has anxiety and maybe a temperature, so just give her tylenol and lorazepam."
We instead called 911, and she is now hospitalized with pneumonia and an infection and getting excellent care. As of today she is getting better. My sisters and I thank God that Hospice was mean to us and discharged my mom or else we would be planning a funeral instead of taking my mom flowers and seeing her smile. The Pres doctor told us, "don't ever let Hospice tell you that you can't call 911, we live in a free country."
Moral of the story: I would advise anyone to use a private Hospice care and not one governed by Medicare. The nurses are trained to follow set criteria instead of using their better judgement. Furthermore, I feel Hospice has a throwaway mentality and will shove morphine on a patient and wait for them to die. Advocate for your loved one, even if people get mad at you because no one knows better than you what is best.

I put my 89+ year old Dad in Assisted Living/Memory Care because he was Driving me Nuts at home (that was probably my First Mistake) Then he had some falls there and needed a Foley put in during a hospitalization (which added almost One Grand/Month to his Bill) SO...

They said "if Hospice is on the case, he can have a free bed with rails and doesn't have to keep going to the Hospital."

They suggested Reverence. The nice, seductive Reverence ladies spoke with me at length, and implied that Dad COULD go to the hospital or have labs if he really needed them...This was essentially BS.

The falls were from Ativan that never calmed him down Anyway (given by the AL Doctors.) THEN Father stopped eating and after a brief period of incoherence became nonverbal in bed and gradually stopped moving his left side. He only yelled "OW!" when you touched his left elbow-probably fractured in one of the falls out of bed. His urine was scant bloody pus, and he passed away a week later. I was with the body for three hours waiting for hospice to declare him and the local cop to come out and declare things "Kosher" since he had a shiner from the fall. I put him to rest without and autopsy, and 90 and one month years old (Not Exactly a Spring Rooster, I Admit.)

I feel if I'd kept him at home and going to outpatient PT he would have done better and maybe lived a year longer. I'm in the Medical Business myself. I feel Terribly Guilty about the Whole Thing.

Vitas Hospice killed my mother in law less than a week ago , she was doing good at the hospital on march 3, that evening they moved her to hospice , I visited the next day...she was unresponsive , they had her on morphine and ativan, so I went again the next day .... again, unresponsive and she died minutes after I arrived . I believe she could have lived a while longer , they rushed her death severely, DO NOT SEND YOUR LOVED ONE TO HOSPICE , let them die at home !!! I cant believe what has happened here.

When she got home from the hospital on April 8 2015.She was so happy to be home. She was laughing at the guys getting her up our steps and talking to everyone and thanking all the people helping out.She was sitting and playing with the grandkids and laughter filled the room. She was doing good then Hospice stepped in and only a day later they changed her. She was not as responsive and seemed druged. She passed on April 14 2015. I'm her loving husband, Dwight Steffey

This is awful. What has happened to this world that life is no longer of value or importance. Everyone needs to stand up together and unite , against Hospice and those who finance hospice care. There need to be a grass roots organization to contest EUTHANASIA. Murder is against the law, even if the person has a terminal illness. Prosecute the hospice agencies, file formal complaints to nursing board against nurses. File complaints to medical boards against doctors. File civil suits against everyone involved. Since medicare finances 100% of hospice care file law suits against medicare. There is some circulating I formation that Medicare is encouraging hospice to speed up the process so that hospice care ,will cost them less. There is some cold heartless monsters out there. I'm going to start by getting on the radio. Everyone needs to raise awareness so that we can fight this. We need to boycott and refuse to use hospice care. I've personally witnessed cruel death by hospice. One of my clients brought her husband to hospital with Alzheimer's, he had for years, but whatever was the matter he was going to be OK. However, when you went home hospice involved. Immediately food and water stopped. He begged for water, The wife listened to hospice nurse and never gave in to his cries for water. He passed in 5 days; she was never the same. She fell into depression and was suicidal. She was getting electroshock therapy last I heard.

Both of my parents are now gone after just 4 1/2 months in a Hospice Care facility. They both had dementia. They were not dying. They were actually both very healthy. But they are both gone now at the hands of Hospice. I suspect my Dad was probably Morphine induced but I am not positive. By time I knew something was going on, he was completely out of it and unable to communicate or talk to me, dying 2 hours after a Hospice Nurse was there. I did see them give him Morphine one time before he passed.. With my mother, they kept her in a Morphine induced coma while starving her to death for 10 long agonizing days, while my sisters listened to the Hospice nurse and agreed this was best! I was the only daughter absolutely opposed to this. She supposedly had a broken hip and Hospice suggested we not "put her through the pain of an xray".. The xray was finally done after a battle to get it done, only too late for my Mom.. She died the day the results were given.. No break, no fracture, no bone lesion, no soft tissue swelling... My mother was euthenized for having a bruised hip. These people need to be stopped..

My grandma is 95 years old. She was told she had cancer after never even having a geadache her entire life. They said cancer was going away. Then suddenly her last visit they said it spread everywhere except her brain. Drs. Talked my grandmas son into doing hospice! Now my poor grandma who was going to the casino every week, until last week, is fighting for her life. She got a virus going around. I know this because EVERYONE in house was sick!!! Hospice said she isnt sick with vurus, its the cancer! So they made my family STOP all water, food, medications! They told my family to let her know its ok to let go and just DIE!!! Its NOT ok! My grandma said NOT YET! She is so weak from only getting MORPHINE!! She is trying to live, but unaware of the evil of HOSPICE, my family is killing her!! Im SOOO SAD! I dont know what to do. She will die for sure with starving her, no water and only MIRPHINE! Who the HELL does hospice think they are playing GOD!!! Hang in there grandma, fight, your stubborn so just hold on! Thats all i can say! Yesterday in her weak voice she kept saying I have to get up! I have to get up! Finally my uncle got her up and she sat in her chair for about an hour. This morning she is wanting ORANGE JUICE and YOGURT! Does that sound like someone you should starve and just let DIE???? FUCK THEM! My grandma has strong will power, she told me before she got sick with virus that she hated the hospice lady and the lady was fat and lazy!! Now the lazy hospice lady is unfeeling and uncaring wanting grandma to just die!

I wonder if the morphine is really just morphine. My client is going through this and it's killing me to watch her suffer. She's not dying peacefully she's the new more pain with thr so called morphine. Somebody need to test it. I think it's poison. but because im just get caregiver, though I feel in love with this wonderful woman I can't do anything. I asked the nurse if she was overdosing her and she said no, which I know she is. I wish I could grab a sample and have it tested because they use their own pharmacy. How do we know if it's not a concoction they mix to kill? And how the heck are they still allowed to kill? My mind is boggled. Abortion clinics are a political debate, why not hospice? Both are murder.

I don't know whether or not they put a toxin in the morphine but I do know that some people's le react very badly to morphine. It can cause them to feel very sick, lose appetite, and suppress their respiratory system. They use methadone in the same way. Hospice exists to save money for Medicare and Medicaid . They get a lump sum payment and do minimal care to maintain the patient , the longer the patient lives the less money the hospice company makes. It's all do to government control of healthcare and lack of will and education by the population. It's very sad.

Karen Challender said...

Tracey Lopez-Hudson, I'm not an expert, but I know for a fact that Ativan is mixed with the Morphine in many, many cases. But I also agree with what you are saying. They do use their own pharmacy, so how do any of us know for sure what's in it. And yes, they absolutely do overdose these people. The whole point is to keep them in a comatose state.
I also agree with Doctor Aether. Many patients become violently ill from Morphine. My husband was hospitalized with severe flu a few years back, and a nurse gave him a shot of Morphine for coughing. FOR COUGHING! He ended up violently sick. After learning so much about all this, I think he's lucky he left the hospital alive!

The Hospice "Nurse" assigned to my Grandfather's case was Rebecca Whiddon Rogers Mitchell Craft of Picayune,MS. She actually asked my Mother if she wanted to "Speed things up" to which my Mom of course replied NO. I heard this conversation myself and horribly, my Grandmother also overheard it. The next day he "Went to sleep" and died. His "Hospice Care Package"(Drugs)arrived 2 days later. The "Nurse" who I later learned is nicknamed "The Angel of Death" was never even investigated although my entire family filed complaints and charges. An autopsy was declined by officials. In my opinion HOSPICE should be renamed "MURDER INC.' Because that's what they do. MURDER patients who can't even defend themselves with "Overdoses". Most horrible of all, the Government and the Medical Profession KNOW about it and do NOTHING. Unless you report it. Then YOUR life is in danger! They WILL take you out if you try and go public, if you make to much fuss trying to report these atrocities.

Funny how you CANNOT get an autopsy on a Hospice Patient. I think the Coroner's are in on this.

Damn I have just started researching about Hospice and how they operate and I am disgusted by this. Reason I have looked into this is I lost a close friend of mine about a month ago and Hospice I feel is the reason why she died so fast. Her doctor gave her 6 months to live and sent her home. She died in 6 DAYS!
No one else seemed to think anything of this but me. Everyone looked at me like I was crazy or something. But I know different. Every time she made a noise the Hospice lady would say that she was in more pain and needed more drugs. Before you knew it she couldn't even talk. My friend had Pancreatic Cancer and I guess that kills you very fast but not no 6 days. When I said something to this Hospice lady she just looked at me and said "Don't you understand how severe this is" I was like YES I sure do but you don't have to go killing her either do you!
And why is it the meds they give them are so very closely monitored and then as soon as you die the first thing Hospice does is swoop in and grab that shit before you can get it checked out. What the hell is it they are giving? Think about this because when your on your death bed and Hospice walks in you are pretty much DEAD and you wont be able to do a thing about it. Unless you have a loved one that is willing to put themselves out there and say something.
This has to STOP and I mean it.
Question:
Why is it the hospital owns you when you walk into their doors, why is it you basically have NO say so on your own health?
Should we really trust all these people that we don't even know?
And what is all this crap that they are putting into your body doing to us?
Just because they are doctors doesn't mean they know shit.
I will NOT have Hospice come for me that is for sure. As soon as someone says anything to me about them coming to take care of me I will jump into my car and Thelma and Louise it and off I go...
